How to Use Your Trane XL724 Thermostat
I install the XL724 when someone wants Wi-Fi control without the bigger touchscreen investment. It does everything the 824 does for scheduling. The interface is button-based, not a touchscreen, so it takes a minute to get used to. Once you do, it is straightforward. This guide walks you through every section you need.

Display and Button Navigation
The XL724 has a backlit LCD display with physical buttons below it. The main controls are:
- Up/Down arrows: Raise or lower the setpoint temperature from the home screen. In menus, scroll through options.
- Menu button: Opens the main settings menu.
- Select/OK button: Confirms a selection or saves a setting.
- Back button: Returns to the previous screen without saving.
- Cancel/Done button: Exits the current menu and returns to the home screen.
The home screen shows current room temperature on the left, your setpoint on the right, and the active mode (Heat, Cool, Auto, Off) along the bottom. A Wi-Fi icon in the top corner shows connection status when linked to your network.
Initial Setup
When I install your system, I complete initial setup at the job site. If you ever need to run through it again:
- Power on the thermostat. The Trane logo displays briefly, then the home screen appears.
- Press Menu, scroll to Setup using the arrow buttons, and press Select.
- Set your time zone (Central for Oklahoma), current date, and current time using the arrow buttons. Press Select to confirm each field.
- Set system type: Heat Pump or Conventional. I will have noted this on the setup sheet I leave at the job.
- The thermostat saves your settings and returns to the home screen.
Connecting to Wi-Fi and the Nexia App
The XL724 supports Nexia remote access. Here is how to connect:
- Press Menu, scroll to Wi-Fi Setup, and press Select.
- The thermostat scans for available networks. Use the arrow buttons to highlight your home Wi-Fi network and press Select.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password using the arrow buttons to cycle through characters. Press Select to confirm each character, then scroll to Done when finished.
- Wait for the Wi-Fi icon in the top corner to show solid (connected). This takes about 30 seconds.
- Download the Nexia Home app on your phone and create a free account.
- In the app, tap Add Device and enter the 8-digit Device ID printed on the label on the side of the thermostat.
Once linked, you can adjust temperature, view energy history, and receive alerts from your phone. The XL724 continues running your programmed schedule if Wi-Fi drops. Reconnect through the Wi-Fi Setup menu when your network is back up.
Programming a 7-Day Schedule
A good schedule is the biggest energy-saver on any system. The XL724 supports four periods per day: Wake, Away, Home, and Sleep.
- Press Menu, scroll to Scheduling, and press Select.
- Select a day of the week with the arrow buttons and press Select.
- For each period (Wake, Away, Home, Sleep), scroll to the period, press Select, and set the start time and your heat and cool setpoints.
- Press Done after each period to save it.
- To copy one day’s schedule to other days, scroll to Copy Day at the bottom of the day menu and select which days to apply it to.
For Oklahoma summers, I suggest: Wake 72F, Away 78F, Home 72F, Sleep 74F. For winter: Wake 70F, Away 66F, Home 70F, Sleep 68F. Small setbacks like these make a real difference in a full month of runtime.
System Mode and Fan Control
Press Menu, scroll to System, then press Select to change your operating mode:
- Heat: Heating only. System will not cool even if temperature rises above setpoint.
- Cool: Cooling only. Normal summer mode.
- Auto: System switches between heating and cooling as needed. Good for spring and fall swings.
- Off: System does not heat or cool. Fan can still run if set to On.
Fan control is in the same System menu. Select Fan and choose:
- Auto: Fan runs only when heating or cooling is active. Most efficient.
- On: Fan runs continuously. Improves air circulation and filtration. Good during Central Oklahoma dust season.
Filter Change Reminder
The XL724 tracks runtime hours and displays a filter alert when it is time to change your filter. After you change the filter:
- Press Menu and scroll to Reminders.
- Select Filter Reminder and press Select.
- Scroll to Reset and press Select to clear the alert.
For 1-inch standard filters in Oklahoma, change every 30-60 days during heavy-use months. Thicker 4-inch media filters typically last 6-12 months. When in doubt, hold the filter up to a window. If you cannot see light through it, it needs changing.
Common Display Codes
- CL or CLEAN: Filter change reminder. Reset after changing the filter (steps above).
- AUX: Auxiliary or backup heat is running. Normal in very cold weather. Not normal in mild temperatures.
- EM HT: Emergency heat mode is active. Bypass only. Not for daily use.
- Low Battery: Replace thermostat batteries. The XL724 uses two AA batteries.
- No Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi icon off: Lost connection to your network. Reconnect via the Wi-Fi Setup menu.

- AUX heat is running constantly even when outdoor temps are above 35 degrees
- Wi-Fi reconnection fails after multiple attempts and your network is working fine
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Trane XL724 and XL824?
The XL724 is button-based navigation with an LCD display. The XL824 is a full color touchscreen. Both connect to the Nexia app, support 7-day scheduling, and run the same features. I install the 724 when someone wants Wi-Fi control at a lower cost. The 824 is easier to navigate for folks who prefer tapping a screen. Performance and energy savings are the same on both.
How do I reset my Trane XL724 to factory settings?
Press Menu, scroll to About or Setup, and look for Factory Reset. This clears all schedules, Wi-Fi settings, and configurations. You will need to re-enter your time zone, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and re-link to the Nexia app afterward. Only do this if I recommend it, as it wipes everything you have programmed.
Does the Trane XL724 work without Wi-Fi?
Yes. The XL724 runs your programmed schedule and controls your system locally without Wi-Fi. You lose the Nexia app remote access, but your system keeps heating and cooling normally. Reconnect through the Wi-Fi Setup menu when your network is back up.
How much does a Trane XL724 thermostat cost to replace?
If your XL724 needs replacing, call me for a quote. There is a $99 dispatch fee and $111 diagnostic to evaluate the issue. If the thermostat itself has failed, I source Trane thermostats through my distributor account. Installation on a like-for-like swap is usually under an hour. Call 405-375-4822 for specifics.
How do I change the batteries in my Trane XL724?
The XL724 uses two AA batteries as a backup power source for memory retention. You do not need to remove the thermostat from the wall. Open the small battery compartment on the side or bottom of the unit, swap in fresh AA batteries, and close the cover. The display and your settings are preserved during battery changes as long as the system has power.
