Bypass humidifier (AprilAire 400/500): Best for homes up to about 3,500 square feet with a standard gas furnace. Works only when the furnace is running.
Fan-powered humidifier (AprilAire 600/700): Works independently of the furnace cycle. Better humidity control in larger homes or homes that do not run the furnace frequently.
Steam humidifier (AprilAire 800): Generates steam electrically, completely independent of the furnace. The most consistent and controllable option. Best for larger homes, homes with heat pumps, or homes where precise humidity control matters.

In winter, interior relative humidity in central Oklahoma homes routinely drops to 20-30 percent, causing cracked wood floors, split door frames, static electricity, bloody noses, and increased susceptibility to respiratory illness. What is the difference between a bypass humidifier and a fan-powered humidifier?
A bypass humidifier uses the furnace blower to push air through a water-saturated pad. It only works when the furnace is running. A fan-powered humidifier has its own built-in fan, so it can add humidity independently of the furnace cycle. Fan-powered models handle larger homes more effectively. When do I need a whole-home dehumidifier instead of just running the AC?
Your air conditioner dehumidifies as a side effect of cooling. But in spring and fall when temperatures are mild and you do not need much cooling, the AC runs infrequently and humidity climbs. A standalone whole-home dehumidifier runs independently of the AC and maintains a set humidity level year-round. What humidity level should I set my humidifier to in Oklahoma winters?
