On a 5-ton geothermal job, the heat pump is only part of the design. Duct capacity, return air, water-side flow, and service access have to be checked before the equipment choice can perform like it should.

Does a bigger geothermal system need bigger ductwork?

Often it does. On a 5-ton job the duct system is usually the limit before the equipment is, which is why I check static pressure and return size before I pick a machine.
