Heat pump service · Central Oklahoma

Heat pump service near you. Tune-ups, repairs, replacements.

A heat pump works twelve months a year here, cooling all summer and heating all winter. That is why it needs a tune-up in both seasons, and why I check it as a heat pump, in heat and in cool, not just the parts it shares with an air conditioner.

Three reasons people call me about a heat pump

It works, keep it that way

Tune-up

Checked in both modes before the season it has to carry. Spring for cooling, fall for heating.

Repair

Blowing cold in heat mode, iced over, short cycling, emergency heat light on. I find the cause before I quote a part.

What you can do yourself

  • Change the filter every 30 to 90 days, more often with pets. Never run the system without one.
  • Keep 2 feet clear on every side of the outdoor unit: no shrubs, grass clippings, leaves or stored stuff.
  • The outdoor unit should sit a few inches above the ground so melt water drains away. If it has sunk, call me.
  • If the outside of the coil is caked with dirt or cottonwood, turn the system off at the thermostat and rinse it gently with a garden hose from the outside. No pressure washer, no cleaners.
  • Keep registers and return grilles inside open and clear.

What is normal in an Oklahoma winter

  • Frost on the coil on cold, damp days is normal.
  • Defrost: every so often the unit reverses for a few minutes to melt that frost. The fan stops, you may hear a whoosh, and steam rolls off the unit. That is it working.
  • Aux heat on the thermostat is the backup heat strip coming on by itself when it is very cold or you raise the setting a lot. Normal.
  • Emergency heat shuts the heat pump off and runs only the backup strips. Use it only if the outdoor unit has stopped working, and call me. It costs a lot more to run.

Snow and ice

Brush light snow off the top and sides with a broom. Do not chip at ice, do not use tools on the coil, and never pour hot water on it. If the whole unit stays encased in ice for more than a few hours, switch the thermostat to Emergency heat and call 405-375-4822.

Frozen in summer?

Turn cooling off and run the fan only to thaw it, and check the filter. If it freezes again, call 405-375-4822. Do not touch the refrigerant lines or open any panels.

Leave these to me

Anything behind a panel (capacitors, contactors, wiring, the control board), anything to do with refrigerant, and a unit that will not defrost, runs Aux all the time, or trips its breaker more than once.

The tune-up

What I check on a heat pump

  1. Both modesI run it in cooling and in heating, because a heat pump that cools fine can still fail to heat.
  2. Refrigerant chargePressures and temperatures on digital gauges, against the maker’s spec.
  3. Reversing valve and defrostThe valve that switches modes, and the board and sensor that clear ice off the outdoor coil in winter.
  4. ElectricalCapacitor, contactor and compressor amp draw, the parts that usually quit on the hottest or coldest day.
  5. Coil, filter and drainA clean outdoor coil, a fresh filter, and a condensate drain that is actually draining.
  6. Backup heatThe electric strips that carry the house below the balance point, checked before you need them.
Plans

Two tune-ups a year for less than two tune-ups

A standalone tune-up is $229. Because a heat pump works both seasons, most people want it checked twice, and that is what the plans are for.

  • One Visit Spring or Fall 360: $199 a yearOne tune-up visit. The value is the visit itself.
  • Spring and Fall 360: $360 a yearTwo tune-ups, 10% off repairs up to $300, and two air filters, one installed at each visit. Two standalone tune-ups would run $458.
  • Full Year 360: $499 a yearTwo tune-ups, 10% off repairs up to $300, filters all year (call the office and pick them up), and no emergency trip charge twice a year.

Frequently asked

Straight answers

Why is steam coming off my heat pump in winter?

That is the defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil. It lasts a few minutes and is normal.

Should I use emergency heat on my heat pump?

Only if the outdoor unit has stopped working. Otherwise leave the thermostat on Heat and let Aux heat come on by itself, and call me if it never shuts off.

How much is a heat pump tune-up near me in central Oklahoma?

A standalone heat pump tune-up is $229, done on weekdays between 7am and 3pm, and you do not need a plan. If you want it checked in spring and fall, the Spring and Fall 360 plan is $360 a year, against $458 for two standalone tune-ups.

How often should a heat pump be serviced in Oklahoma?

Twice a year: spring before cooling season and fall before heating season. A heat pump runs in both seasons here, so it racks up far more hours than an air conditioner that rests half the year.

How much does heat pump service cost if something is wrong?

The service call is $210 flat: $99 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic, not credited toward the repair. I quote the repair in writing before I do the work. After hours it is $309: $198 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic, non-refundable.

Do you service heat pumps near me in Edmond, Yukon and Oklahoma City?

Yes, I serve all of those. I cover Kingfisher, Canadian, Oklahoma, Garfield, Major, Logan and Blaine counties, including Oklahoma City, Edmond, Yukon, Piedmont, Mustang, El Reno, Guthrie and Enid.

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

A well-maintained heat pump typically lasts 12 to 15 years in central Oklahoma. If yours is past 12 years and needs a compressor or reversing valve, I will lay out the repair price next to a replacement quote, and the new-system estimate is free.

What brands of heat pumps do you service?

All major brands. I am a Trane Comfort Specialist (TCS SELECT) dealer, a Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer and an Amana Brand Advantage dealer, and IGSHPA accredited for geothermal heat pumps.
