Trane Heat Pumps In Oklahoma: Which One Fits Your House
I have been a Trane dealer for ten years, long enough to have installed every rung of this lineup and gone back out in August to fix ones somebody else sized wrong. This is what I actually put in Oklahoma houses and who each one suits.
I am Dave Hartzell. I started at 18, I have been at this 47 years, and 15+ of those running my own shop in Kingfisher. Master HVAC License, NATE Certified, IGSHPA Accredited. 4.8 stars, 300+ Google reviews.
The Trane Heat Pumps I Install
Trane separates this range by how the compressor runs, and that drives comfort, humidity, noise, and what the meter does. Every rating below is Trane’s own published heat pump figure.
| Model | Compressor | Trane published rating | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| XR14 | Single stage | Up to 14.8 SEER2 / 7.8 HSPF2 | Rentals, flips, a hard budget ceiling |
| XR15 | Single stage | Up to 16.0 SEER2 / 8.1 HSPF2 | Straightforward replacements |
| XV18 | Variable speed, 25 to 100 percent | Up to 18.0 SEER2 / 8.5 HSPF2 | Humidity and hot-room complaints |
| XV20i | Variable speed, 25 to 100 percent | Up to 20.5 SEER2 / 8.7 HSPF2 | Long-term owners, heavy runtime |
Trane XR14
Single stage: the compressor is off or running flat out. Trane rates it up to 14.8 SEER2 and 7.8 HSPF2, and footnotes plainly that the XR14 heat pump does not meet ENERGY STAR requirements. Right call when budget decides, or on a house being sold in two years.
Trane XR15
Also single stage, and I have to correct something repeated all over the internet: the XR15 is not a two stage unit. Trane’s spec table lists one compressor stage and 100 percent capacity variability, and names it the XR15 Single-Stage Heat Pump. What you gain over the XR14 is efficiency, up to 16.0 SEER2 and 8.1 HSPF2.
Trane XV18
The jump people actually feel. Variable speed modulates the compressor from 25 to 100 percent instead of slamming on and off, so it runs long at low output, and that is what pulls humidity out of an Oklahoma house in July. Trane rates it up to 18.0 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2.
Trane XV20i
Same variable speed behavior, published up to 20.5 SEER2 and 8.7 HSPF2 as a heat pump. What I install when somebody is staying in the house, runs it hard, and cares more about daily behavior than the smallest number on the estimate.
Trane’s current single stage pages list 1.5 through 5 tons, the variable speed pages 2, 3, 4 and 5 tons. I size from a load calculation.
Trane Renamed This Lineup In 2025
In April 2025 Trane refreshed the residential portfolio and retired these names. The XR15 became the 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump and the XV18 became the 18 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump. Trane says the last one flatly: “The 20 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard replaces the XV20i heat pump.” The refresh moved the line onto R-454B refrigerant, and ratings moved too: that 16 Single-Stage is published up to 17 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2.
What The Ratings Actually Mean Here
The rating belongs to a matched pair, not the box on the pad. DOE certifies a specific outdoor unit with a specific indoor coil, and the same condenser on a different coil can rate lower. ENERGY STAR works the same way, depending on the coil used.
Oklahoma sits in DOE’s Southeast region, and that regional standard applies only to air conditioners. Heat pumps everywhere answer to one national floor: 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 for a split system built on or after January 1, 2023. Our region carries no EER2 floor at all. If somebody says Oklahoma rules force you into a higher heat pump number, that is not right.
SEER2 is cooling delivered divided by electricity consumed, so electricity scales inversely for the same job. A unit at the 14.3 floor uses roughly 26 percent more cooling season electricity than an 18 SEER2 unit doing identical work. That is a ratio for equal output, not a percentage off your bill.
The Two Temperatures That Matter In Oklahoma
Heat pumps get rated for low temperature heating at 17 degrees. The 99 percent heating design temperature across the counties I serve daily is 13 degrees, 15 in Blaine. Only about four degrees below the rating point, and that is the honest reason air-source heat pumps work well here and struggle in Minnesota.
Cooling is the opposite. It gets rated at 95 degrees and our 1 percent cooling design temperature is 100 to 101. Summer, not winter, is when an Oklahoma heat pump works past its rating sheet. Strip heat, meanwhile, is a COP of 1.0 by definition, so a million Btu of it takes 293 kWh. At Oklahoma’s average residential rate of 13.38 cents per kWh that is $39.21, and a heat pump at a COP of 2 delivers the same heat for half. Strip heat is a backup, not a heating plan.
The Warranty, Stated Honestly
Trane’s limited warranty is a parts warranty, and the term depends on model family and registration. Unregistered, base coverage is five years on compressor, outdoor coil and parts. Register within 60 days of the commencement date and it goes to ten years, with twelve on the compressor only on some premium lines. What it excludes matters more: Trane furnishes a replacement part, and labor, diagnostic calls, freight, refrigerant and line sets are excluded. That is why a service call still costs money on a unit under warranty.
What It Costs, And What Is Actually Available
There is always a dispatch fee and always a diagnostic fee. A residential service call is $99 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic, $210 total. The tech gives a written repair estimate before repair work starts. After hours emergency is $309, non-refundable. A standalone AC tune-up is $229, maintenance plans start at $199 a year, and an estimate on a new system is free. If cost is the obstacle, I work with Synchrony, Wells Fargo, Wisetack, Klarna and JB Financing.
The residential federal tax credit, 25D, has expired. I will not dangle it in front of you. Ask a tax professional and read the current IRS documents. Locally, in Garfield and Major counties, Alfalfa Electric Cooperative pays $150 per ton on an air-source heat pump and $1,050 per ton on a ground-source system.
When Geothermal Is The Better Answer
I install both, so I will say it straight. If you are staying put a long time and have the land, geothermal beats any air-source heat pump on efficiency. Just know you cannot compare them on a spec sheet: air-source is rated against outdoor air under AHRI 210/240, geothermal against entering water temperature under ISO 13256-1, so setting 20.5 SEER2 beside a geothermal COP compares two different tests. Geothermal is statewide work for me, IGSHPA accredited, and the diagnostic is $348 flat at any hour. If that system is done, replacement work is quoted separately before approval. Run geothermal against a Trane 18 SEER system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Trane heat pump is best for an Oklahoma house?
Anybody who answers without seeing your house is guessing. Staying long term, the XV18 or XV20i earn their money, because variable speed runs long and low and that controls humidity here. Selling soon or buying a rental, the XR14 or XR15 makes sense.
How much does a Trane heat pump cost in Kingfisher Oklahoma?
I will not put a number on a web page, because the price depends on tonnage, the coil it gets matched to, your ductwork and electrical, and the load calculation. The estimate on a new system is free. Call 405-375-4822.
Does Oklahoma require a certain SEER2 for a heat pump?
Only the national one. Oklahoma is in DOE’s Southeast region, but that regional standard covers air conditioners, not heat pumps. A split system heat pump built on or after January 1, 2023 has to hit 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 anywhere in the country.
What happened to the Trane XV20i, I cannot find it on Trane’s site?
Trane retired the old names in April 2025. The 20 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard replaces the XV20i heat pump.
Do I have to register my Trane heat pump to get the full warranty?
Yes, and the window is tight: 60 days from the commencement date. Registered, compressor, outdoor coil and parts run ten years. Miss it and you drop to the five year base term.
Daily service on standard air-source equipment covers my seven home counties: Kingfisher, Canadian, Oklahoma, Garfield, Major, Logan and Blaine. Geothermal I handle statewide.
